A Four Week Journaling Exercise Based on The Sun Tarot Card

A close Virgo friend recommended I start making journaling prompts again for my followers and since it’s her birthday season I thought no better time to start than now. This month’s journaling prompts are based around The Sun tarot card which is one of the challenge cards for September. If you want to learn more about the card and the month ahead, check out my YouTube Video here.
To go straight to the journaling prompts, see Google PDF Link at the end of the post!
The Sun in tarot is a card of warmth, vitality, and joy. It speaks to our inner fire, all that makes us feel alive and present in this world. It is also our identity and purpose. It is the special sparkle within us that makes each of wholly unique.
In this deck, we see two children playing out underneath the bright afternoon sun. This got me thinking about the joys we felt as children and if it’s possible to replicate those experiences as an adult. Which lead me to the first question: What are fifteen things that brought you joy as a child?
In writing your list you can be as general as playing make believe with friends or as specific as watching Winnie The Pooh in the morning while eating honey-nut Cheerios. You can take as much time as you want writing this list or you can set a timer and see how many of them you can write in a minute.
For the next part, you will choose one of the fifteen things you wrote and get detailed about it. For example if you wrote spending the weekend at my grandparents brings you joy, what was it about being there that you enjoyed? What was it about their home that you loved? What activities did you do together? What special memories do you have of being at your grandparents’ home?
Once you have completed these two parts, you’ll duplicate the process but from the viewpoint of your current self.
What are the fifteen things that bring you joy as an adult? For me, writing this list took much longer! Though I experience joy everyday, my mind is more on work or the practicalities of everyday life. It was also interesting to see which things I still shared with my childhood self and where my interests changed.
Once you’ve got your second list, you’ll again choose one of the fifteen things and get detailed about it. For example, if you wrote you going to the movie theater brings you joy, what is it about that you like? Is it the yummy snacks you get to eat? Is it disconnecting from your phone and the outside world for a hour or two? Or is it more about the people that you go with to the movies? Perhaps a friend or a lover that you get all snuggly with. Or maybe you like the ritual you have after the movie, going to a diner and discussing the film.
Now here’s the really fun part! You’ll choose two things from each list to do for one week of the month and journal about the experiences afterwards. Don’t worry about recreating the experiences exactly as you did them as a child but try to take the core elements of what you enjoyed about them. For example if you wrote playing Animal Crossing with your sibling, but now you live far away from them, you could still have a game night via long distance! It doesn’t even have to be the same game, but something that has those same elements you liked about the original.
Just remember to have fun with it. The whole purpose of these exercises is to bring joy into your life.
After the four weeks, you’ll answer two more questions that will tie in the whole experience together. Check out my PDF below to see what they are!
Hope you enjoyed these journaling prompts for September! Let me know how it goes for you and if it sparks some joy.
